Rockin' and Rollin'

We've been on the ship for two days that have been filled with orientation. It's great fun to be on a very nice ship with about 60 people, faculty and staff, who are very interesting and thrilled to be here.  Yesterday we had some rough seas so motion sickness spread through the ship. Tonight the seas are even higher and I can't sleep (It's 4 a.m.). So far, I haven't been struck by the deadly nausea but the ship's movement makes it hard to sleep. I can only imagine what it must have been like for Columbus and his crew! I can't send a photo of the rough seas since it's pitch black outside and all the lights on the ship make it virtually impossible to see the ocean. Danielle and Kathleen, however, are sleeping like babies ... zzz

Waiting to Board the Ship

MV Explorer in Panama, Summer 2007
Around the world in 110 days? Isn't this a bit slow? Yes, but it's not on a plane, car or balloon, but on a ship - the MV Explorer. I'm teaching on Semester at Sea and am in Norfolk, VA, waiting to board the ship that will take us to 10 countries. I'm traveling with my wife, Kathleen Adams, who is also teaching on the ship, and our 8-year old daughter, Danielle. I taught on the ship in summer 2007 on an eight country voyage to Latin America. We loved it and can't wait to get back on the Explorer. This is my first blog and my intent is to document this trip around the world. More to come ...
